This is the watch that built modern Tudor. Before the 79230N existed, Tudor was a footnote in Rolex's story — the affordable sibling nobody talked about at dinner. This reference changed that. The matte black domed dial carries rose gold-toned gilt printing, applied indexes, and Tudor's signature Snowflake hands — the angular, geometric hour hand lifted directly from the watches Tudor supplied to the French Marine Nationale in the 1970s — and the combination creates a warmth and vintage character that no other modern dive watch in this price bracket comes close to matching. The lume fills are a deliberate creamy off-white rather than bright green, reinforcing that fauxtina aesthetic without any of the fragility of an actual vintage piece. Pair it with the rivet-style bracelet — a period-correct design detail that adds tactile character every time you put the watch on — and the 79230N looks like a watch that's been telling stories for decades, except it's backed by a COSC-certified in-house movement with a 70-hour power reserve.
The MT5602 is the reason this watch punches so far above its price. A manufacture chronometer caliber with a silicon balance spring and free-sprung variable inertia balance, running at 28,800 vph — that's the same movement architecture you'd expect from watches costing two and three times as much. Tudor replaced the entire 79230N line in 2024 with a new-generation Black Bay carrying a different reference and fewer of the heritage details that made this one collectible, which means the specific combination of domed crystal, unprotected screw-down crown with the Tudor rose, black anodized aluminum bezel disc with the red-triangle lume pip, and that gilt Snowflake dial is now a closed chapter. Eight years of continuous production, and every one of those design decisions still holds up.
