This is the previous-generation Aqua Terra that a lot of collectors argue Omega got more right than not — and the black dial on bracelet is the configuration that ages the best out of the entire 231-series lineup. At 38.5mm, it sits in a size class that the current 41mm Aqua Terras moved away from, and for a lot of wrists that's actually the better fit. It wears like a proper mid-size: present without being imposing, and slim enough at 13.5mm to slide under a cuff without a fight.
The sun-brushed and lacquered black dial with the vertical teak pattern is the key visual distinction from the newer horizontal-teak 220 generation — the vertical grain gives the dial a more traditional, almost pinstriped quality that reads dressier in person. The date window sits at 3 o'clock here rather than the 6 o'clock position on the current models, which is a preference divider among collectors but keeps the lower half of the dial cleaner.
Under the hood, the Calibre 8500 is the movement that put Omega's in-house program on the map — it's the first mass-produced calibre built from the ground up around the Co-Axial escapement rather than retrofitting it into an existing ETA architecture. It doesn't have the METAS Master Chronometer certification of the newer 8900, but it carries COSC chronometer status and the same 15,000 gauss magnetic resistance.
For buyers who want Aqua Terra DNA in a slightly more compact, slightly dressier package with a movement that's proven itself over nearly two decades of production, this reference is the one to look at.
