The Planet Ocean GMT is, in a lot of ways, the watch the Seamaster line was always building toward — the one where Omega stopped borrowing movements and complications from the parts bin and started engineering them from the ground up. Introduced in 2013 alongside the GoodPlanet edition, this was the first Planet Ocean to carry a true GMT complication, and it did so with a fully in-house engine rather than a modified ETA base. That distinction matters.
At the heart of this thing sits the Calibre 8605, derived from the landmark 8500 movement family that Omega positioned as its modern flagship architecture. It runs a three-level Co-Axial escapement — the mature, problem-free evolution that left the early Calibre 2500 teething issues far behind — paired with a silicon Si14 balance spring on a free-sprung balance, dual barrels in series for a stable 60-hour power reserve, and a jumping hour hand that makes independent time-zone adjustments clean and mechanical rather than fiddly. COSC-certified, naturally. Visible through the exhibition caseback, the rhodium-plated bridges and arabesque Geneva waves are finished to a standard that punches well above the price point.
On the wrist, this is a 43.5mm tool watch that actually commits to being a tool watch. 600 meters of water resistance with a helium escape valve, a polished black ceramic bezel with a full 24-hour GMT scale in LiquidMetal, and a lacquered black dial with applied luminous indices and Arabic numerals at the cardinal positions. The orange-tipped GMT hand reads against the bezel scale at a glance — no ambiguity, no squinting. It's a diver, a travel watch, and a daily-wear piece all at once, and it doesn't compromise on any of those jobs to serve the others.
