The Speedmaster Moonwatch is a 42mm professional instrument in steel. This is something else entirely. The Speedmaster 38 takes the iconic asymmetrical case, the lyre-shaped lugs, and the tachymeter bezel and scales them to 38mm, then dresses the whole thing in a two-tone combination of stainless steel and 18K Sedna gold that the Moonwatch never offered. The polished-brushed Sedna gold bezel with its tachymeter scale on a brown aluminum ring sets the color temperature for the entire watch — warm, rich, deliberate — and the "cappuccino" dial underneath delivers on that promise. It's a beige-brown sunray finish with horizontal brown oval subdials and a vertical oval date window at 6 o'clock, and the oval subdial shape is a design element unique to the Speedmaster 38 line that softens the traditional three-register chronograph layout into something that reads closer to jewelry than instrumentation. The hands and applied indexes are 18K Sedna gold with white Super-LumiNova, and the entire warm palette — gold case elements, cappuccino dial, brown subdials, taupe-brown alligator strap — creates a monochromatic coherence that no steel Speedmaster in any size can replicate.
